Collections and Journals Review 2009
Uncertain economic conditions, the state budget reductions,
and continued price increases for journals and databases above
standard inflation rates will severely impact the collections
budget this year. In FY2009/2010 the NCSU Libraries collections
budget will sustain a cut of $1.5 million – a 15% reduction
from the 2008/2009 allocation. Under the guidance of the University
Library Committee and in consultation with the NC State community
the Libraries undertook a comprehensive review
process to prepare for these cuts.
The review included input from faculty, staff, and students and identified 586
titles for cancellation. In addition
to the journal cancellations described above, the Libraries will also take the
following steps to offset the cuts to the collections budget:
- Reduce monographic spending – estimate buying approximately
10,000 fewer books this year.
- Move to online only for many journal
titles
- Freeze investment in new materials such as journals, databases, e-resources,
backfiles,
The NCSU Libraries is committed to maintaining a collection of excellence
that meets the research and learning needs of the NC State community. The
collection is at the center of what we do and is essential to research
and teaching. If you have questions or concerns about the cuts to the collections
budget please do not hesitate to contact us:

There is also an FAQ available
that addresses a number of potential questions about the collections
review including the Libraries’ commitment to document delivery for
canceled titles, moving journal titles to electronic only to realize 5-10%
savings on subscriptions, and the timeline for the overall process.
For university-wide suggestions on the budget situation and
opportunities for efficiency at the university, the Chancellor
has created a budget forum to
update and solicit input from the university community.
