Overview of Image Resources and Related Services
Image Databases
NCSU Libraries offers a number of online image collections with an emphasis on design and art-related disciples. The images in these collections are available to faculty, staff and students. For a
list of additional online image collections and databases, see the Image Resources page.

For detailed instructions, see A Guide to the Design Library Image Collection in Luna Insight 6.0.
ARTstor
ARTstor is a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, graphic design, the humanities and the build environment. It provides tools to browse, search, view, present and manage images for research and teaching purposes.
ARTstor hosts copies of all the images found in the Design Library Image Collection. NCSU patrons can also utilize four UNC image collections, including the Art Department Visual Resources Library. After registering with ARTstor and logging in, NCSU faculty, staff and students will see all five image collections listed under “Institutional Collections.” These collections can be searched independently or along with all of the images contained in ARTstor.
With ARTstor, patrons have the ability to do the following:
- Browse content by collection, classification or geography
- Search content by keyword or advanced search terms
- Sort search results by date, creator or title
- Zoom in and pan images for greater detail
- Print and save images and related data to other hardware
- Create groups of images for later retrieval and presentation
- Organize image groups into shared folders
- Direct others to images or image groups
- Upload personal images and sounds files to ARTstor
- Export images and image groups to ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer (OIV) presentation tool
- Save citations for images or image groups, and email or print these, as well as export them directly into EndNote, ProCite, RefWorks, Reference Manager or a text file.
For instructions on getting started with ARTstor, see An Overview of ARTstor. To learn how to use ARTstor's advanced features, see Instructor Level Access.
Camio
OCLC’s Catalog of Art Museum Images Online is a growing online collection documenting works of art from museums located all around the world. Its contents highlight global cultures, from prehistoric to contemporary times.
Camio’s browseable and searchable images may be used for educational and research purposes, if they are properly credited. Patrons can save images to other hardware, like a hard drive or memory stick.
Oxford Art Online/Grove Dictionary of Art
Grove Art Online offers over 5,000 searchable art images, maps and architectural drawings. This resource also provides over 40,000 selected image links to museums and galleries around the world.
Patrons can print, email and save images to other hardware, like a hard drive or memory stick. Grove Art Online provides patrons with a citation builder that can create citations in both MLA and Chicago Style. It also allows individuals to export a citation in the RIS format, which is suitable for ReferenceManager, ProCite, EndNote and RefWorks applications.
North Carolina Architects and Builders

Digital Image-Related Services at the Design Library
Scanning of Existing Slides in Design Library Image Collection
In addition to the 52,000 digital images, the Design Library Image Collection also contains about 80,000 35mm slides which may or may not be available in digital format. If you like a slide(s) scanned or rescanned because of poor image quality, please contact the staff at the Design Library.
Image Requests/Copystand Photography
The Design Library offers copystand photography as a way to improve and develop the contents of the Image Collection. The images that faculty members request will be the property of NCSU Libraries. The library is not providing any personal image services at this time. See http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/design/imagerequests.html for Image Request Forms and more information.
Contribute!
Contribute! is a program designed to encourage faculty to add their personal images to the Design Library Image Collection. The benefit of making your images part of the collection is permanent storage in a location where all university faculty, staff and students can access.
We welcome your digital images and slides and will add them to the collection, if an identical image does not already exist in the Design Library Image Database, and if each image is of good quality and is properly identified. We prefer to make digital derivatives of the slides and return them to the owner. See http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/design/contribute.html for the Digital Image and Slide Submission Form and more information on the program.
Training for Design Library Image Collection and ARTstor
The Design Library website contains instructional information on the use of the Design Library Image Collection and ARTstor. If they do not provide enough information for your needs, we also offer both one-on-one and group training.
