The NCSU Libraries

The NCSU Libraries is the gateway to knowledge for North Carolina State University and its partners. As the cornerstone of a great research university, the Libraries supports the science, technology, engineering and mathematics innovation that is the economic engine of growth for the state.

OUR SPACES—the most used resource on campus

  • Up to 16,000 visits per day; 2.5 million visits in 2008/09; 42% increase from 2007/08 to 2008/09
  • Open 24 hours, five days per week during the academic year
  • Technology-rich Learning Commons, new Special Collections Reading Room, and Exhibit Gallery
  • Information Technologies Teaching Center, with three teaching labs
  • Digital Media Laboratory and Usability Research Laboratory
  • Digital Scholarship and Publishing Center, collaborating with scholars on digital publications and intellectual property and copyright issues
  • DELTA Instructional Services Faculty Development Services Group, supporting faculty in the creation and delivery of online courses
  • Host for NC LIVE, a project that makes digital resources accessible to N.C. residents

OUR SERVICES—technology incubator for the university

  • Discovery through revolutionary online catalog powered by Endeca search software
  • Reference, interlibrary loan, and circulation renewal services to the NC State community via the Web
  • Only full U.S. patent and trademark depository in the region
  • Electronic-reserve system that provides twenty-four-hour access to course reserves via the web
  • Books for all courses available on reserve
  • Lending services offer laptop computers, mp3 players, digital cameras/camcorders, GPS, iPods, Kindles and more
  • “Library Tools” for students—a detailed online guide to the Libraries’ resources for every course at the university

OUR COLLECTION—user-driven, digital-savvy, collaborative

  • More than 4 million volumes, approximately 62,000 print and electronic serial subscriptions (51,000 of them electronic), 500 bibliographic databases, and a growing array of electronic full-text and image collections
  • Over 3 million total uses in 2008/09
  • Almost 2 million full-text journal article downloads from the collection per year
  • Strengths in agriculture, architecture, biological sciences, design, engineering, entomology, forest resources, mathematics, physical sciences, statistics, textiles, and veterinary medicine
  • Access to over 400,000 electronic books
  • Cross-searching capabilities and Tripsaver delivery service with the Triangle Research Libraries Network (NC State, Duke, NC Central, and UNC–Chapel Hill)
  • Geographic Information System services and extensive data resources
  • Papers and Drawings of George Matsumoto, Tippmann and Metcalf Entomology Collections, Greenways Archive, papers and rare books in genetics and plant and forestry genomics, Willard Byrd Golf Course Design Drawings and Other Papers, and University Archives Photographic Collection
